Statement on Scheduling of DA Pamela Price Recall Election

Prosecutors Alliance Action Executive Director Cristine Soto Deberry issued the following statement on today’s decision by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to schedule the recall of District Attorney Pamela Price for the November general election:

“The recall of DA Pamela Price is funded by deep-pocketed donors who have spent millions of dollars on paid signature gatherers to qualify for the ballot. We are glad that today, the Board of Supervisors decided to do the right thing and save taxpayers millions by putting the recall election on the November ballot. This will ensure that the most voters possible will have their voice heard in this important decision about the future of public safety in the county.

Despite what its proponents want the public to think, this recall campaign – which started shortly after DA Price took office – has never been about public safety. If it were, its supporters would likely have a different target given that the same year she was elected, just four percent of property crimes and 18 percent of violent crimes were solved by law enforcement in Alameda County. In Oakland, less than two percent of serious crimes were solved. Coming after the DA when the vast majority of those who commit crimes are never caught – and therefore can’t be prosecuted – is woefully misguided. The advocates of the recall continue to relentlessly target the first Black woman to serve as the county’s DA by spreading false narratives about her record and commitment to crime survivors and public safety. We hope the voters will see through the misinformation and invest in the preventive and rehabilitative approaches supported by DA Price that will bring real public safety to their communities.”
