RELEASE: No Kings Act Passes First Critical Legislative Test

As federal agents relentlessly attack our communities without consequence, the No Kings Act would hold federal, state, and local officials accountable for violating rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Sacramento, CA – Today, the No Kings Act – Senate Bill 747 by California Senator Scott Wiener – passed the California Senate Judiciary Committee, its first legislative committee. In recent years, the U.S. Supreme Court has gutted legal remedies for federal overreach that violates core rights guaranteed by the Constitution, such as free speech and equal protection. The No Kings Act closes this legal loophole by creating a right of action under California state law for violations of constitutional rights, giving Californians a robust new path to gain relief and hold government actors accountable for lawless behavior. The bill is co-sponsored by Prosecutors Alliance Action, the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, and Protect Democracy United, who look forward to robust conversations about the bill with all parties as it continues through the legislature.

“Every day, we see federal agents acting with impunity – terrorizing our communities, abducting our neighbors, and assaulting peaceful protestors with dangerous and even deadly force. At a moment like this, Californians must have a clear path to accountability when their constitutional rights are violated. The No Kings Act affirms a basic principle of our democracy: no one is above the law. Anyone who supports the Constitution and the rule of law should stand behind it,” said Cristine Soto DeBerry,  Executive Director of Prosecutors Alliance Action

“For months, we’ve seen nothing but egregious constitutional violations committed by federal officials acting with complete impunity. Californians are depending on their leaders to take immediate action to protect them and provide meaningful pathways for accountability. That is why the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice is proud to be a cosponsor of SB 747, the No Kings Act. No one is above the law, and we cannot continue to allow the violent terrorism of this administration to go unchecked,” said Hector-Andree Pereyra, Policy Manager at the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice.
