Prosecutors Alliance Action Executive Director Cristine Soto DeBerry issued the following statement in response to the election of Florida State Attorney Monique Worrell, who was previously removed from office by Governor Ron DeSantis:
“When Governor DeSantis undemocratically removed Monique Worrell from office, he unequivocally told the voters of Orange and Osceola Counties that their voices didn’t matter. Today, those same voters sent a clear message back to DeSantis that it is the people who have the power and who get to determine the future of justice and safety for their own communities. In a democracy, the people should always hold the power to choose, and this election serves as an important reminder that we must protect and cherish that right.
We know that this is not the end. Governor DeSantis and other extremist governors and legislators across the country will continue to do all they can to undermine and remove elected prosecutors they disagree with. We will continue to fight to protect the will of the people and the communities that are simply seeking a different approach to bring safety to their neighborhoods.”
