Prosecutors Alliance Action Executive Director Cristine Soto DeBerry issued the following statement in response to the Department of Justice launching an investigation into the Hennepin County (MN) Attorney’s Office:
“Once again, we’re witnessing President Trump weaponize the Department of Justice to attack and intimidate his political opponents. While President Trump wants prosecutors at the DOJ to be loyal to him and his political agenda, local prosecutors like Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty are loyal to the Constitution, the rule of law, and justice.
Unlike CA Moriarty, who is focused on the safety of her community, President Trump and his DOJ are focused on revenge and retribution. They have actively made our communities less safe – slashing hundreds of millions of dollars from victim services and crime prevention, undoing sensible gun safety measures, pardoning violent insurrectionists, ousting long-serving prosecutors and law enforcement officials, cutting mental health funding, and so much more.
For decades, the DOJ Civil Rights Division has been entrusted with protecting Americans from discrimination and upholding the rule of law without fear or favor. To see it distorted into a political arm of the Trump White House is not only an insult to its historic mission – it’s a threat to the integrity of our justice system and the democratic principles it was built to defend.
While Trump stands for no one but himself, we must always stand up for public safety, justice, and independent prosecution.”
