Prosecutors Alliance Action and the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, co-sponsors of the No Secret Police Act, respond to the Trump Administration’s lawsuit to block SB 627 from taking effect.
Sacramento, CA – Today, the Trump Administration filed a lawsuit to block California SB 627, the No Secret Police Act, a groundbreaking law to prohibit local and federal law enforcement from hiding behind masks. The law was signed by Governor Newsom and is set to take effect on Jan. 1.
“At a challenging moment for law enforcement and communities, the Trump DOJ is choosing to fight harder for secret police than for public safety and crime survivors. If the Trump Administration really cared about protecting federal officers, they would follow their own FBI’s advice to require officers to identify themselves. As long as masked police are coming into our communities and kidnapping people into unmarked vehicles, they are the ones promoting lawlessness on our streets and blurring the lines between legitimate officers and imposters. We are proud to continue defending SB 627 to stop these dangerous secret police tactics,” said Cristine Soto DeBerry, Executive Director of Prosecutors Alliance Action, a co-sponsor of SB 627.
“The Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice knows firsthand how urgently our communities need accountability against federal agents. SB 627, the No Secret Police Act, is not unconstitutional. It is a necessary protection for immigrant families who have endured months of trauma at the hands of unidentified officers operating without transparency and oversight. The Trump administration’s attempt to block the No Secret Police Act is yet another reckless effort to shield abusive practices. California will not back down because our communities deserve transparency and accountability. No one, not even federal agents, are above the law.” said Hector-Andree Pereyra, Policy Manager at the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice.
