Prosecutors Alliance Action Executive Director Cristine Soto DeBerry issued the following statement in response to the Trump Administration referring New York Attorney General Letitia James for potential prosecution:
“President Trump has been disturbingly clear about his plans to use his administration to get revenge on his political opponents. At the top of his list are the state and local prosecutors who held him accountable for his frauds, assaults and election interference. He is seemingly going after Attorney General James simply for doing her job – prosecuting people who violate the law and harm the community. President Trump may not care about the rule of law, but revenge is not grounds for prosecution.
While the Trump Administration is laser-focused on retribution, AG James is working around the clock to protect her community, and there is much for her office to do in response to the White House’s endless assaults on public safety. Trump has cut violence prevention and victim services grants; pardoned violent insurrectionists; purged dozens of experienced prosecutors and law enforcement officials; enacted cruel and dangerous immigration policies that foster distrust between communities and law enforcement; and so much more. As the President continues to endanger our communities with his reckless policies, we are fortunate to have conscientious prosecutors like AG James fighting to keep the people of New York safe.”
